Activity Functions
Creating Assignable Activities
Teachers bundle a set of questions into a Assignable Activity on FluencyLink. You may add previously created questions to an activity or create questions as you go. (See Adding Questions above.) For details on creating questions, see our FluencyLink Activities - Questions guide.
Click New Assignable Activity to start creating an activity.
Test Settings
While creating a new assignable activity, you can implement the following test settings, by clicking on the "Settings" icon. An activity can be created without changing the settings, but please familiarize yourself with them to determine the best settings to use for your class. Please also see our Recommended Score Settings below.
Some test settings, such as Partial Scoring will become locked for editing once it has been assigned or attempted, so please remember to decide on your settings before doing so. If you want to edit settings that are locked, you can make a clone of the activity.
1. Set Test Rules - Add notes for students about how you want them to take the activity.
2. Grade(s) - Select a grade.
3. Subject(s) - Select a subject.
4. CCSS - Common Core State Standards.
5. Time Limits (Minutes) - Set a time limit for students to answer the questions. The activity will be automatically submitted when the time runs out.
(Note: Cannot be used if “Check Answer on Each Attempt” is ON.)
6. Allow Question Skip - If the "Allow Question Skip" toggle is ON, it will allow students to skip a question, without submitting an answer, and return to answer it later.
7. Content(s) - Associate this activity with particular content. Can be used when filtering.
8. Shuffle Questions - If the "Shuffle Questions" toggle is ON, it will shuffle the order in which the questions appear. The questions will be shuffled each time a user attempts the activity.
9. Test Summary - If the "Test Summary" toggle is ON, it will enable a button on completion of the activity, allowing students to see submitted answers, with correct/incorrect feedback, as a summary at the end of the activity.
10. Step Solution - If "Step Solution" toggle is ON, it will allow students to see the previous question, with their submitted answer, while completing the next question in the quiz.
The step solution setting is also disabled as soon as we add a question from 'Question Bank' which has multiple answers, like match the following. Step Solution works with single answer type questions only.
11. Check Answer on Each Attempt - If the "Check Answer on Each Attempt" toggle is ON, the below settings are enabled on the "Test Settings" pop up and it will allow students more than one attempt to answer a question correctly.
(Note: Cannot be used if “Time Limit” is set. Forces Question Skip ON.)
11a. Attempts Allowed - Specifies the number of attempts a student is permitted for a question.
11b. Deduct Score on Each Attempt
Specifies whether the score deducted is based on marks or a percentage value. You can select percentages or points from the drop-down.
The publisher, teacher or school/district admin must also specify the actual value of the marks or percentage to be deducted in the space provided. Here, 0 is set as the default value of the marks.
11c. Keep Score For - You can select one of the following from the dropdown.
Each Attempt - As soon as a user gets an answer incorrect, the score is deducted.
First Attempt - Deducts marks for incorrect answers on the user’s first attempt.
Last Attempt - Deducts marks for incorrect answers on the user’s last attempt.
Scoring Methods
12. Enable Partial Scoring - If the "Enable Partial Scoring" toggle is ON, it will allow the activity creator to award marks for a partially correct answer. You can select the scoring method for partial scoring from the "Scoring Method" drop down.
12a. Exact Match / Partial Scoring OFF - With Exact Match, the student must get the ENTIRE question correct to receive a score.
For example - In multiple-choice type questions, if Option 1 and Option 2 are the correct answer and a user chooses only Option 1, then the user will be scored 0.
12b. Partial Scoring per Response – Each correct response element will be awarded an individual score and each response is of equal value. If the question is given a score of 1, then each correct response for this question will be worth 1 mark.
For example - Marks for an MCQ question is set at 1 and there are 3 response elements within the question. If the User answers 2 of the response elements correctly, the user will receive a total question score of 2 marks out of a possible 3. If the user only answered 1 response element correctly, then they will get 1 mark out of the 3 available marks for the question.
12c. Partial Scoring per Question – Each correct response element will be scored individually, and the overall question score will be divided between responses.
Question Types: Fill in the Blanks, Match the Following, Association.
For example - If the question is given a score of 1, and there are three response elements within the question, then each response will be worth 0.33 marks (based on 33% of 1 mark, rounded to 2 decimal places).
Question Type: Multiple Choice
For example - If there is a multiple choice question that is scored 1 and there are 3 choices within the question, wherein 2 choices are correct and one is incorrect, then each response score will be 0.5. If the user responds with 1 correct choice, then they will get 0.5 marks out of 1.
For Association activity, a mark is only awarded for each correct item pairing (e.g. Paris - France), not per item.
12d. Rounding Setting is enabled if "Partial Scoring per Question" is selected. The score will be rounded off for each question. The options are:
When Rounding Setting is "Allowed" - The overall question score will be divided between correct responses and rounded down to the nearest whole number.
When Rounding setting is "None" – The overall question score will be divided between correct responses and rounded to two decimal places.
Notes:
Partial scoring will be available for the following question types:
Multiple Choice
Association
Match the Following
Fill in the Blanks
Fill in the Blanks with the Drop-down
Fill in the blanks with Drag and Drop
Partial Scoring is not available for the following question types, wherein the teacher will evaluate the question score or the question will be auto-evaluated:
Single Choice (auto-evaluated)
Ordering (auto-evaluated)
Description (Teacher evaluated)
The Comprehension question type question must be used in conjunction with one of the other templates and will assume that template's scoring options.
13. Custom Messages - If the "Custom Message" toggle is ON, then on completion of the activity, it provides the student with different feedback, based on the percentage score achieved.
You can create a new message by clicking on "+New Message."
We recommend using "partial scoring per question" when using pre-made Questions provided by Cheng & Tsui. This will allow students to get the most credit for partially correct answers.
If you turn Enable Partial Scoring to ON, “...per question” should be selected.
Score Examples
"Partial scoring per response" makes the Question score the score for each response. This ends up multiplying the max score.
For example, a Fill in the Blank question with a score of 6, each response element (i.e. blank) is worth 6 points, which will multiply the total possible score.
1 response element = max score of 6
2 response elements = max score of 12
3 response elements = max score of 18
In contrast, "no partial scoring" or "partial scoring per question" will keep the max score at 6 and divide the value of each response.
1 response element (i.e. blank) worth 6 points = max score of 6
2 response elements worth 3 points each = max score of 6
3 response elements worth 2 points each = max score of 6
6 response elements worth 1 point each = max score of 6
This example below shows how the scoring method can affect the percentage score:
Example: Score results for the same activity answers with different score settings.
No partial scoring - 5/16 = 31%
Per question (rounding allowed) - 11.17/16 = 70%
Per response - 27/45 = 60%

Assign Activity
Activities may be assigned to classes or groups, who may then complete the activity to be evaluated for a score.
Unassign Activity
This feature allows teachers to unassign the activity from previous classes/groups and assign them to new classes/groups.
(Note: Student responses whether saved, submitted, or evaluated are lost if an activity is unassigned. Re-assigning the activity is treated as a fresh activity.)
1. Locate the activity you want to unassign and click the Assign icon:
You will see the below pop up if the activity is already being assigned to a class/group.
2. Click on “Edit already assigned classes or groups”.
3. Click on the “X” icon in the selected class/group to unassign an activity for the class or group.
4. Teachers can also assign a new class/group to the activity by selecting the class from the “Assign to classes” and “Assign to Groups” fields.
5. Click ‘Save’.
6. If the teacher has removed any class/group from the already assigned section then the teacher will receive another confirmation message.
7. Click ‘Unassign’ to confirm.
